Easy and Simple Air Fryer Wontons

Jump to Recipe

Get ready to crumble the crispy, addictive goodness of wontons (Chinese dumplings made from thin wheat wrappers filled with savory meat or vegetables) like it's nobody's business! We first tried these little pockets of delight at a friend's Chinese takeout night, and let's just say-our snack game was never the same!

These things are so versatile, it's like they're the chameleons of the cooking world. Stuff them with anything from classic pork to adventurous veggies, and you're in for a treat!

The magic happens when you air fry them; you get that golden crunch without the guilt of diving into a deep fryer.

Who knew you could make something so irresistible with a little bit of air? Let's roll on over to the fun part: the ingredients!

Ingredients for Air Fryer Wontons

Time to gather your delicious goodies for this wonton extravaganza:

  • Wonton Wrappers: Get the square ones unless you're up for a challenge with the round ones!
  • Ground Meat: Pork, chicken, or your choice of protein. Just make sure it's prepped and ready to go!
  • Veggies: Chopped green onions, carrots, or even a little cabbage for some crunch!
  • Soy Sauce: A splash of this liquid gold adds that umami flair we all crave.
  • Sesame Oil: Just a drizzle for that nutty aroma-your kitchen will smell divine.
  • Garlic and Ginger: Spiced up, minced, and loving it. Trust us, they're a must!
  • Egg: For sealing the deal; it's the glue that holds our little parcels together.

You excited yet? Let's get the party started!

Tips for Perfect Air Fryer Wontons

Ready to rock your wonton-making skills? Here are some hot tips:

  • Moisture Control: Don't overstuff your wontons; keep them just snug enough, using about 1 teaspoon of filling per wrapper.
  • Think of it as a little love note making sure they stay together in the air fryer, and for more simple ideas try side dishes that pair with beef tips.
  • Spray 'Em Right: A light spritz of cooking spray before cooking helps achieve that crisp outer layer, using an avocado or canola oil spray for a higher smoke point.

Variations and Substitutions

Feeling adventurous with your wonton fillings? Check this out!

  • Cheesy Wontons: Mix in some cream cheese for a rich twist that's a total crowd-pleaser!
  • Spicy Sambal: Add a spoonful of sambal oelek, a Southeast Asian chili paste, or your favorite hot sauce to the filling for a kick that'll wake everyone up!
  • Sweet Potato Surprise: Use mashed sweet potatoes and spices for a nice vegetarian variant, with their naturally sweet, creamy texture, and pair them with moist cornbread variations for sides.
  • Dumpling Duo: If you're feeling fancy, go for half sweet (like chocolate) and half savory; let your guests have a "choose your own adventure" moment!

Serving Suggestions

Once your wontons are done and looking oh-so-amazing, here are a few fun serve-up ideas:

  • Dipping Sauce Delight: Serve with soy sauce, sweet chili sauce, or a mix of both; try a 1:1 ratio of soy sauce to sweet chili sauce for a balanced sweet-salty dip.
  • Wonton Board: Create a beautiful spread with different fillings and toss in some dipping sauces-your guests will oooh and aaah just like at a fancy restaurant!
  • Soup It Up: Toss some wontons into a bowl of steaming broth, such as a light chicken broth or miso, for a cozy, delicious meal.

Instructions

  • In a bowl, mix together your ground meat, veggies, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger until combined.
  • Place a wonton wrapper in your hand and spoon about a teaspoon of filling in the center. Brush the edges with the beaten egg and fold into a triangle, pressing to seal. You can also fold them into little pockets or whatever shape suits your fancy!
  • Repeat until all wrappers are filled. Give them a spritz of oil so they don't just sit there looking pretty without that golden glow.
  • Preheat your air fryer to 350°F and arrange the wontons in a single layer (you may need to do this in batches).
  • Air fry for about 10-12 minutes, flipping them halfway through until they're crispy and golden brown.
  • Serve hot alongside your dipping sauce of choice and dig in-your tastebuds are ready for the party!

Notes

  • Feel free to get creative with your fillings; the sky's the limit! Do you love spicy? Go for it! Want something cheesy? You do you!
  • Leftover wontons can be stored in the fridge for a couple of days, but just like the baba ganoush, these will fly off the shelves!

Crispy sides are a natural match for fried-style snacks-try crispy air fryer french fries, which brown best at about 375°F for 15-20 minutes. For a protein-forward option that sears nicely in the air fryer, try seared air fryer tuna steak, cooked quickly at high heat to develop a browned exterior while staying tender inside.
